The Tech Stack Study
Tools and techniques news publishers use to produce, distribute and monetize information
A yearly snapshot of the technologies powering digital news publishers.
Running a news organization today means making constant technology decisions: tools for audience growth, newsroom production, subscription journeys, advertising monetization, data infrastructure, and more.
Yet these stacks remain mostly invisible – rarely shared publicly, difficult to benchmark, and fragmented across teams.
That is exactly why the Tech Stack Study exists.
Each year, the project, backed by Sciences Po University, collects responses directly from professionals inside news publishers to build an anonymized, aggregated overview of the tools shaping the press industry.
In 2026, the study expands beyond France and introduces a fourth category dedicated to advertising technologies.
Take the 2026 survey
The 2026 study is built around 3 short surveys, each taking less than 10 minutes. By answering, you help create a shared industry reference – while keeping your organization’s responses fully confidential.

FAQs
Who can participate in the Tech Stack Study?
Any online news publisher is welcome to take part in the study. Participation is especially valuable when representatives from different teams respond to the relevant thematic surveys (Marketing, Editorial, Tech/Product).
External consultants or service providers working with multiple publishers may also contribute, but they are asked to submit separate responses for each client organization, rather than a single grouped answer, which may be rejected.
How long does it take to complete the surveys?
Each questionnaire is designed to be short and focused. Completing one survey typically takes less than 10 minutes.
Participants may answer only the section relevant to their role, or contribute across multiple areas if appropriate.
How is the Tech Stack Study funded?
The Tech Stack Study is a fully volunteer-led and non-commercial initiative.
It is not funded by any company, vendor, sponsor, or third party.
Its sole purpose is to contribute to shared knowledge and understanding of the publishing technology landscape
Is the Tech Stack Study connected to the professional activities of its authors?
No. The Tech Stack Study is an independent initiative, separate from the professional activities of the individuals involved.
It is not affiliated with any commercial company or consulting activity, and it does not serve any business interest beyond producing a shared industry reference.
Who has access to the responses submitted by participants?
Access to raw responses is strictly limited.
Only the study’s founder, Marion Wyss, and the administrative team of the Sciences Po School of Journalism have access to the collected data.
No other professionals, organizations, or external contributors have access to individual responses.
Do technology vendors or platforms mentioned in the study have access to the results?
No.
None of the companies, tools, or vendors cited in the study have access to the survey data or to any non-public results.
All findings are published only in anonymized, aggregated form.
Are responses anonymous?
Yes. All results are processed and published in aggregated and anonymized form.
The study does not disclose which publisher uses which specific tool, and individual responses are never made public.
What happens to the data after each edition?
Survey responses are used solely to produce the annual Tech Stack report.
No data is resold, shared, or reused for commercial purposes.
The project does not build any external database of publisher stacks beyond the consolidated yearly publication.
